Being a pioneer of "green building," my approach is to reduce consumerism, recycle, and reuse materials with low embodied energy that are low maintenance, and safe for humans and the environment. Although LEED is well intentioned, LEED certified buildings can be more expensive and use more total energy than reusing an existing building. LEED fasters the fallacy that suburbia is sustainable.
